A Captain Sanchez seminar is an illuminating event. It casts a light on many aspects of self-defense - technical kenpo, physical readiness, environmental awareness, how to survive a catastrophe such as a mass shooting. His insights are based on experience well-tempered by much practice. I learned a great deal from Capt. Sanchez in both his seminars and his book and have no reserve in recommending him to anyone looking to expand their horizons and to keep themselves safe.He is a deeply religious man, and his Christian faith powered his book - it was much more in evidence in his book than in his seminar work. It often set me back, reading The Watchman, as my religious views are considerably different and I often found the biblical references pulled me from the more straight-up practical usage I was looking for. But they in no way distracted me from the value of the insights of a man who has devoted his life and his intelligence to service.
The Watchman is an extraordinary book in many ways, not the least as an insight into a most interesting mind. I recollect one moment in Captain Sanchez' seminar (on surviving a mass shooting) that resonated deeply in me both at the time and 'till now, when he was talking about making decisions in the most heated of terrifying moments of danger, and said that we should 'know who you are, it will save you time.'
This is a book of great simplicity, insight and practical use and I hope you get the chance to read it.

If one were to parse only the self-defense information from this book, it would stand as an irreducible manual on the elements of self-defense - one that encompasses not only the timeless, unchanging tenets, but the elements related to the specific nature of the violence of our times as well. This world has and will continue to be a dangerous place, and on this (physical) basis alone that fact makes this book a must-read.
But the author goes beyond the defense of the physical being, successfully expanding the concept of self-defense with the defense of the spirit, the soul - the immortal. Wherever you happen to land on the religious spectrum, this book holds the keys to “watch” over you and lead you onward. The cherry on top is like a true master, Sanchez delivers this triumph of knowledge and wisdom in the spirit of complete humility and service.

This book is a wake up call for those that have not experienced and/or do not believe that evil exists in this world. The author provides both experiential evidence, and biblical quotes that support the existence of evil. It is and excellent guide for "why to" and "how to" develop an everyday sense of "situational awareness." As a proficient martial arts instructor, and an accomplished law enforcement professional, he has the knowledge and experience to recognize predators before they strike, and offers suggestions on how to survive such strike. The author gives both legal and biblical support for the use of force to repel an attack from a predator. The book is a quick and easy read, and I highly recommend it.
After attending an active shooter seminar with Mr. Sanchez a couple of years ago, I couldn't wait to get home and read his book. It exceeded my high expectations in every way.
Religious discussions have always left me feeling uncomfortable and unsettled. However, spending an afternoon with Mr. Sanchez I realized that maybe it was just the way it had been presented to me in the past. I truly enjoyed Mr. Sanchez's skill for bringing the Christian aspect into self-defense, martial arts, and life in such a way that he had my full attention from start to finish. This book continued in the same manner. After reading this book I found myself constantly picking it up to read small parts of it over and over again.
I enjoyed this book, and the wisdom within, so much, that I gave my copies away. Now I am back ordering again.
A very valuable book on self-defense and survival mindset from Capt. Ron Sanchez (Ret.), someone who has clear experience in understanding the way criminals think and act while being able to give advanced wisdom to the reader on how to avoid dangerous situations. His bona fides are in order decades on the police force in Los Angeles dealing with some of the worst of society (including, as the book details, corrupt law enforcement) and just as many years of training in various martial arts and combat tactics. Although this is not a book on martial arts or self-defense techniques persay, it does have something to say about pursuing training as part of an overall approach to defense.
His tips on how to anticipate an imminent assault are worth the price of the book alone. Watch for these signs in people and you will be on a much better footing to deal with an assault or leave before it happens.
One of the distinguishing marks of this book comes from Capt. Sanchez's emphasis on "spiritual" principles of defense. He is not using the term spiritual in a vague, general sense as it is commonly used today. A Christian believer, applies relevant scriptural support for his thesis that ungodly behavior can and often does result in physical harm or instability — giving concrete examples from his years of experience as a police officer where these principals have borne themselves out.
This short review is in lieu of a much more detailed one I hope to write soon, but I believe this book is important enough to garner your immediate attention. The message and instruction of this book is highly relevant for this day and age and I hope you find it as indispensable to yours and your families safety as I have.
